Manufacturing Engineer – Machining

Job Summary

The Manufacturing Engineer – Machining will provide planning and engineering support for the company on all manufacturing processes, particularly those involving machining operations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining a safe working environment for all employees in the facility, including leading efforts on design safety controls where needed.
  • Design jigs, fixtures and custom tooling for a wide range of processes.
  • Write programs for CNC mills and machine centers to optimize standard times and increase efficiency.
  • Write programs for CMM to measure components for first off inspection.
  • Develop standardized work for current and new processes.
  • Specify tooling and fixtures for new product introduction and product improvement/change processes.
  • Design production layouts to optimize process flow and efficiency.
  • Design safety systems and guarding for new and current processes.
  • Use OEM drawings or reverse engineering to develop processes, tooling and fixtures for cleaning, salvage, Inspection, NDT, assembly and final test processes.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides necessary technical information to improve salvage processes and equipment.
  • Adheres to all safety guidelines, and uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) preventing incidents or injury to self or others.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area for safe operation as well as customer presentation.
  • Performs work according to the highest quality standards to produce a superior end product, meeting or exceeding customer expectations.
  • Participates in and supports the principles of Open Book Management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to read and create technical drawings and interpret geometric and dimensional tolerances in metric and standard measurements.
  • Ability to translate GDT and technical drawings into efficient machining and production processes.
  • Ability to read and create layout drawings and plan process flow.
  • High level of proficiency with letter address code (G code) and experience of programming for vertical or horizontal machine centers in a production environment (Similar experience with turning advantageous but not required).
  • Competent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to write programs with inherent poka-yoke features.
  • Ability to utilize 4th and 5th axis for fixturing or machining, including interpolation with primary axis.
  • Proficiency in general machining and knowledge of tooling systems for turning and milling operations.
  • Experience with at least one CMM software package and one machine tool control system (i.e. Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain etc.).
  • Ability to design safe processes and equipment and create guarding, interlocks and other safety devises as part of fixture or process design.
  • Knowledge and understanding of limits and fits for standard and metric components.
  • Experience of using a probe for compensated programming.
  • Understanding of general mechanical assembly techniques and processes.
  • Ability to design tooling, (including inspection devices) fixtures and process equipment.
  • Ability to use and specify all types of mechanical and electrical measuring devices.
  • Knowledge of cutting operations with different materials (Cast Iron, Aluminum and alloy steels)
  • Ability to engage and coordinate outside contractors and consultants to achieve capital or project objectives.
  • Experience with at least one drawing/design package (SolidWorks experience preferred but experience with alternative such as Pro-E, inventor etc. would be accepted).
  • Computer proficiency with Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of high volume manufacturing processes, pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical systems, PLC control, welding, materials, diesel and natural gas engines, transmissions and torque converters would all be advantageous.
  • Possesses interpersonal and teambuilding skills to move projects to completion.
  • Competent oral and written communication skills.

Experience Requirements

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering and 2-5 years of experience
  • 2 Year Technical degree with 15 years of experience with demonstrated progressive experience

Physical Requirements Essential to Perform the Duties of the Job

  • Frequently remains in sitting position to perform duties at desk and on computer.
  • Occasionally communicates with employees to provide technical advice and product requirements for pricing.
  • Occasionally lifts and moves products with weight up to 60 pounds.
  • Seldom lifts and moves products and heavy material weighing over 60 pound with assistance.
  • Frequently remains in a standing position to perform functions and duties.
  • Frequently analyzes production processes to determine needs and pricing expectations.
  • Frequently views computer and technical equipment to perform required documentation.
  • Occasionally stoops, kneels, or bends to move products.
  • Occasionally climbs stairs, ladders, and equipment to analyze products.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside elements.
